Sustainable Building Concepts

The United States Green Building Council reports that building’s have a tremendous impact on the nation’s environment, accounting for:
  • 36% of total energy use/65% of electricity consumption
  • 30% of greenhouse gas emissions
  • 30% of raw materials use
  • 30% of waste output/136 million tons annually
  • 12% of potable water consumption

And, construction is among the largest industries in the United States, providing jobs to millions ranging in all types of education and comprising as much as 14% of the nation’s gross national product.

Given the importance of the construction industry to our economy and the impact buildings have on our environment, it is no surprise that design professionals are on the cutting edge of the sustainable building movement. In North Carolina alone there are already 12 LEED Certified Projects and 63 LEED Registered Projects.
